💡 Why passphrases?

• Easier to remember than random character strings

• 4+ random words give ~77+ bits of entropy — extremely secure

• Used by security experts worldwide (EFF Diceware method)

• Great for master passwords and account recovery

What makes a passphrase strong

A passphrase's strength comes from how many words are in the dictionary it's drawn from and how many words you use, not from mixing in symbols. Each additional random word roughly multiplies the number of possible combinations by the size of the word list, which is why four to six words from a large list reach security comparable to a long random character string — while staying far easier to type and recall.

This differs from picking your own multi-word phrase, which tends to reuse common sayings or names attackers already account for. The words here are chosen independently and at random each time, which is what the entropy estimate above is measuring — not the number of words alone.
